ASIA, INC. CONDEMNS PRESIDENT’S DECISION TO END DACA

Cleveland, OH – Today, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the Trump administration will terminate Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA), after President Trump’s told DACA recipients to “rest easy” in an earlier address. As of today, no new DACA applications will be processed.

Asian Services In Action, Inc. (ASIA, Inc.) issued a statement today condemning the President’s decision, and reaffirming our commitment to support and stand in full solidarity with Dreamers and affected communities. The organization is also urging Congress to enact a permanent, bipartisan legislative solution that would protect DACA recipients and provide a pathway to citizenship.

Though the program has been rescinded, current beneficiaries of the DACA program will not be affected until March 5, 2018. Recipients with legal questions should contact ASIA, Inc. Immigration Attorney, Melissa Gawelek at 216-880-3003 Ext. 8805 or mgawelek@asiaohio.org.

“Ending DACA will devastate the lives of so many young AAPI men and women who only know America as home,” said Melissa Gawelek, Immigration Attorney at ASIA, Inc..

More than 800,000 DACA recipients, known as Dreamers, have had their requests for DACA approved since the program was put in place, over 16,000 being young Asian immigrants, and nearly 4,400 from Ohio. Ending DACA would result in a loss of over $460 billion over the next decade. Ohio would experience a loss of more than $251 million by terminating DACA.

“ASIA, Inc. stands in full solidarity with all the Dreamers who have fought endlessly to protect the rights of AAPIs across the nation and in the State of Ohio,” said Michael Byun, ASIA, Inc. CEO.
