Comment Portal for SNAP Proposal

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has proposed new rules that will restrict who may access benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP. By law, the government must accept comments regarding proposed rule changes and must show it took them into account when issuing a final rule. ASIA, Inc. is part of a national coalition working to encourage people to submit comments opposing the proposed rules.

The USDA’s proposed rule would restrict SNAP benefits for non-disabled people between the ages of 18 and 49, who do not have children or other dependents. Those people would have to meet work requirements. Those who do not meet the work requirements would only be able to access three months of benefits over a 36 month period.

The new proposal would also limit the exemptions a state can issue. Currently, states can issue exemptions that extend SNAP eligibility based on economic conditions. Under the proposed rule, a state can only issue an exemption for an area with an unemployment rate of seven percent or higher.

ASIA, Inc. opposes the proposed rules. If enacted, the rules would expand work requirements which will hurt people who depend on SNAP benefits. We expect the rules will particularly harm people who have difficulty finding work due to health problems or limited English proficiency.

Please use this comment portal to submit comments against the proposed SNAP rules. If possible, offer personal stories about how SNAP benefits have helped you or people in your community. The deadline for comments is April 12, 2019.  Portal presented by the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC).

To Whom It May Concern,

I strongly oppose the proposed rule that would impose new requirements on able-bodied adults without dependents who seek SNAP benefits. These changes will increase food insecurity, which will increase health risks. These changes will impact me and/or my community because:

I urge you to withdraw the SNAP rule, which will harm our nation’s future.
