SUMMARY

Asian Services In Action (ASIA), Inc. seeks a highly motivated and bright individual who possesses a diversified set of skills for the Policy Research Internship. The person will be working with the Policy-Advocacy Program under the Policy-Advocacy and Development Department assisting in the coordination and execution of ASIA, Inc.’s policy research. This position will work in coordination on other projects as assigned by the Policy-Advocacy Coordinator and the Senior Manager of Policy-Advocacy, and Development Department. The work schedule is flexible, and will run Monday-Friday.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Following an initial period of training, the intern will participate in all core services offered through the policy research program at ASIA, Inc. Throughout the intern’s time at ASIA, Inc., the intern will also assist in identifying and proposing alternatives to improve on the policy research team. The responsibilities and duties of the Policy Research Intern will focus on the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) and New American communities.

  • Complete a series of policy research report(s) by the end of term;
  • Conduct data analysis to use as references for issue advocacy efforts;
  • Desire to explore and elevate public policy solution that better serve the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) and New American communities;
  • Review, follow, and report on current and pending legislation and policies at the National, State, and Local level;
  • Evaluate the effects of policies that affect the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) and New American communities at the National, State, and Local level;
  • Work with the Communications Coordinator to develop data visuals and educational documents for a diverse population;
  • Access public data and policies, work with datasets, assess policy outcomes;
  • Research issues in the community;
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A current undergraduate or graduate student;
  • Coursework in political science, government, economic, criminal justice, sociology, or related fields;
  • Minimum of 20 hours per week required;
  • Must be adept in working with diverse staff who are multicultural and multilingual;
  • Detailed oriented, organized, and ability to multitask;
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with MS Office and OS applications;
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs or more;
  • Has access to reliable transportation;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills both in-person and by phone, with high professionalism;
  • Proven written communication skills with emphasis on creating and writing technical briefs and collateral material;
  • Ability to work under pressure and maintain the quality of detailed work while meeting competing and inflexible deadlines;
  • Must have a strong commitment to immigrant and refugee concerns and have a great commitment to excellence in social services;
  • Knowledge of AAPI cultures, respect for all cultures, and ability to interact with diverse groups preferred;
  • Must pass a criminal background check;
  • Valid Ohio State driver’s license preferred.

The position reports to the Policy-Advocacy Coordinator. We are seeking a candidate who has strong technical and soft skills, high energy, maturity and potential for leadership.
