ASIA, Inc.’s Spring Speaker Series is the premier event highlighting Ohio’s refugee community and showcasing the refugee experience. This year’s event is being held during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May. Guests will hear from Akron’s own Officer Damber Subba  the first Nepali refugee from Bhutan to become an officer in the Akron Police Department. Officer Subba, who arrived in the United States nearly 10 years ago, will share his experience of coming to America and how joining the police department allows him to act as a bridge between the city’s Bhutanese-Nepali refugee community and the City of Akron.

Past speakers include former Cleveland City Councilman Joe Cimperman, Akron Public Schools ESL and Foreign Language Learning Specialist Loi Dang-Nguyen, Ph.D., and former U.S. Army Interpreter Hamayon Yaqobi.

All ticket sales and general donations will directly support ASIA Inc.’s services to refugee and immigrant families and individuals. Every donation made in 2019 will be matched dollar-for-dollar thanks to the generosity of the New Americans Campaign EFFORTS Fund.
