(Akron, OH) Asian Services in Action (ASIA) has partnered with Jin Huo Community (JHC) to release the second edition of the Co-Generational Magazine. Completed at the end of summer 2025, the magazine features new narratives of aging adults from JHC, poems written by students from ASIA’s International Community Empowerment Project (ICEP) after-school program, and illustrations by the aging adults.
"The Co-Generational Magazine is one of the favorite aspects of my job,” said Emily Grad, Project Specialist of ASIA’s Children, Youth, and Family Services. “I love getting to see the aging adults connect with the students. And I am continually proud of my high schoolers for compiling this magazine and leading the interviews. I truly hope everyone enjoys the poems, illustrations, and narratives.”
While the first edition focused on the stories of the seniors, this edition of the Co-Generational magazine turns the spotlight on the student participants and gives them a medium to reflect on what has been important in shaping their lives. Thirty-four students, ranging from ages six to twelve, composed I Am From poems that reflect their unique experiences as “cross-cultural kids” who grow up blending the cultures of their family’s country of origin and the United States. In this edition, more Afghan students and stories are included to emphasize Cuyahoga Falls City School District’s growing multiculturalism. Aging adults were subsequently paired with a student to provide an illustration of their poem, which gave them opportunity to connect with students across generational and cultural divides.
"I thought that the [Co-Generational] Magazine was enjoyable!” said Natalie Vang, a senior at Akron Early College and one of the student compilers of the magazine. “I was able to work creatively and put together pieces that I thought represented kids and senior citizens well.”
The Co-Generational Magazine: Second Edition is dedicated to Della Liu-Tang, one of the Chinese senior participants of both the magazine’s first and second edition. She passed away before the publication of the second edition.
Both editions of the magazine will be available for digital viewing on ASIA’s website on Friday, September 26.
