[News] ASIA Welcomes 2016 Summer Interns

ASIA welcomes 6 new summer interns from Michigan, Pennsylvania, Southern Ohio, Montana, Akron, and NorthEast Ohio. Our summer interns joined ASIA in June of 2016 and will stay with ASIA until the end of August. We are thrilled to have them working with us! Learn more about our wonderful interns below!

Hometown: Olmsted Falls, Ohio
University: University of Pittsburgh
Major: Dual Masters in Social Work and International Development
Internship Placement: Children, Youth, and Family (CYF) Department

Emily Atherton grew up in the suburbs on the west side of Cleveland and graduated from high school in 2009. She then attended Ohio University, where she studied intercultural communication. While in college, she worked as an English pronunciation tutor and studied abroad in Beijing. After graduation, Emily moved to Pittsburgh and served in AmeriCorps for two years, the first year at an elementary school and the second year at a refugee resettlement agency. Last fall, she started her graduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh. She hopes to enter a career in social services for refugees and immigrants. In her spare time, Emily enjoys vegetarian cooking, spending time with friends and family, and studying Mandarin.

University: Ohio Northern University, Claude W. Pettit College of Law.
Degree: 2017 Juris Doctor Candidate
Internship Placement: Legal Immigration Department

Julie Smith is a rising third year law student at Ohio Northern University Claude W. Pettit College of Law, with a passion for immigration law. She hopes to work with refugees and asyless after she graduates and passes the Ohio Bar Exam. She attended The Ohio State University and recieved a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Diplomacy with a minor in Korean studies. She loves reading, cooking, traveling, and the Cleveland Browns. Her favorite part about working at Asian Services in Action is talking with clients.

Hometown: Rochester, Michigan
University: Baldwin Wallace University
Major: Public Relations, Sociology & Marketing minors
Internship Placement: Policy, Advocacy, and Development (PAD) Department.

Katherine Brewer will be a junior at Baldwin Wallace University this coming fall. She enjoys studying public relations, marketing, & sociology and actively seeks ways to gain more experience. On her university’s campus she is the Vice President of Recruitment for Alpha Gamma Delta, Public Relations Chair for Student Giving Council, and an active member of The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). This summer she is excited to be interning at ASIA through the Cleveland Foundation. She enjoys living near Cleveland for the summer and learning about everything the city has to offer. Katherine is looking forward to working with the PAD deparment on communications efforts!

Nathan McClintock is currently working toward completing his MSW at the University of Akron-Lakewood. He has always been passionate about helping people and would like to devote his work toward improving the lives of others. Interning with Asian Services in Action has been a great experience for Nathan, it’s provided him with the opportunity to bring direct services to the target population. He is very grateful for the opportunity!

After graduating college, Katie Rider plans to attend law school and get a degree in Environmental law so she can work for a non-profit. Her hobbies include hiking, kayaking, gardening, reading, writing, and volunteering. Outside of her academic work at Baldwin Wallace, she is the president of philosophy club and is involved in her sorority (Alpha Gamma Delta), student government, sustainability committee, the honors program, and has a job in the study abroad office. This coming fall she is looking forward to being a course assistant for two courses, and to studying abroad in India with fellow students.

Katelynn Gardner is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio but moved to Akron in 2011 to attend college at the University of Akron. She plans on graduating from the University of Akron in August. Katelynn loves working with people and after she graduates she plans to take a year off from school and move to Columbus, Ohio. Katelynn started here at ASIA earlier this year in January and has had such a great experience so far! She is looking forward to her last semester here at ASIA!
