Take your first step toward becoming a medical interpreter by registering for the Fall session of the Breaking Boundaries in Healthcare®–Medical Interpreting Program (BBiH-MIP). This 40-hour course will help interpreters, health care providers, and administrative staff work more effectively with LEP (Limited English Proficiency) patients. Classes will be held on Saturdays (9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.) from October 10 to November 7, 2020 at the Akron office located at 370 East Market Street. The written exam (2 – 3 hours) will be given on November 14; the oral exam will be given by appointment. Participants must pass both the written (English) and oral exams (English and native languages) to receive the ALTA Certificate of Qualification.

During the five days, participants will work with language coaches. The course covers topics such as language access and disparities in healthcare, HIPAA compliance, code of ethics and standards of practice, roles of an interpreter, techniques for effective interpreting, basic anatomy terms, medical testing and procedures, professional development, and more.
